The Mets received a positive update on ace Jacob deGrom as he battles through an injury.

Much of the focus surrounding the New York Mets so far in 2021 has to do with the struggles of Francisco Lindor. But one other star in town is raising some concerns.

Jacob deGrom missed his last start and has not pitched since April 28. Right lat inflammation has been the culprit and is the only thing slowing down the ace’s historic pace this season.

The Mets are going to have a tough time contending without deGrom and a positive update emerged from the team Thursday evening.

Mets ace Jacob deGrom could be back Sunday

As the update states, deGrom has a bullpen session scheduled for Friday. That will be the ultimate test to see how his lat feels. There is no need to rush him back if he is still feeling the effects of the injury. That could end up being a long-term disaster.

deGrom was off to a mind-blowing start with 59 strikeouts in his first five games. 43 of those came in only three starts. He has been out for a week and still remains the only logical choice for the National League Cy Young Award early in the season.

The ace has allowed a total of two earned runs this year and the Mets are not going to be real contenders without him on the mound. That is true regardless of whether Lindor turns it around.

Sunday is now the target for a deGrom return. That is great news for the Mets, and awful news for opposing hitters the rest of the season.

Next. Francisco Lindor and pressure of playing in NYC. dark
