Nick Saban records PSA for Alabamians to get COVID vaccine

Alabama football coach Nick Saban wants you to get vaccinated so Bryant-Denny Stadium can be full of fans this fall.

There may be no better way to get Alabamians to go get their COVID-19 vaccine than to hear it from Alabama football coach Nick Saban in a public service announcement. And he’s done just that, according to the Wall Street Journal.

No position carries more clout in the state than the head coach of the Crimson Tide, not even the governor. It just means more down here, but Alabama has not done its part to get vaccinated for the coronavirus as other states in the country. Alabama’s vaccination rate is the slowest in the country. There is a surplus of vaccines in the state and they might be shipped out of Alabama to others where there is an apparent shortage.

“College football fans and players both want full stadiums this fall,” said Saban in the PSA that will air on radio, television and social media next week. “Let’s make sure we can safely make this happen by getting vaccinated. Please get your Covid-19 vaccine. We want Bryant-Denny Stadium loud again this coming … and Roll Tide!”

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne supported the work Saban is doing to get people vaccinated.

Saban battled COVID during the Crimson Tide’s national championship-winning season. He had to miss the Iron Bowl after contracting the virus. Saban nearly missed a big game earlier in the season vs. Georgia, but that turned out to be a false positive.

Previously, Saban released a PSA at the onset of the pandemic, urging people to wash their hands and practice social distancing. When the pandemic worsened, two months later, Saban recorded a video urging people to wear masks. After Saban recovered from his bout with COVID-19, he said blood plasma donations helped him make a full recovery and urged people to donate their blood plasma.

Overall, there are people in every state who are reticent about getting a vaccine. While everyone is allowed to make their own choice of what is best for them and their family, the sooner we can get this virus under control, the sooner we can return to normalcy in our lives. Saban recording a PSA to encourage Alabamians to get a vaccine should help those on the fence about getting vaccinated move forward with getting it.
