Infamous MLB umpire Angel Hernandez struck again as the White Sox faced the Royals with a truly awful call from behind home plate.

If you know the name Angel Hernandez, you know what’s coming.

On Sunday, the Chicago White Sox were screwed over by his latest astoundingly bad call, one that should be the final straw for MLB.

Tim Anderson was at the plate in the top of the fourth with a 2-1 count. Kansas City Royals pitcher Mike Minor tossed an 80 mph curveball well to the left of the strike zone. Hernandez, in his infinite wisdom, called the strike and ended the inning.

That thing wasn’t even close. It’s embarrassing.

Umpire Angel Hernandez is up to his old tricks

The job of a home plate umpire is anything but easy. Still, how did Hernandez manage to get that call so wrong?

The White Sox can take heart that the bad strike call didn’t cost them much. They continued to pull away and won 9-3, completing the sweep in Kansas City.

The Royals may have benefitted this time, but it’s not like they haven’t been on the receiving end of terrible calls from the same umpire. Just a few days ago, they had reason to be furious with him.

Fans of every team in every sporting league on the planet think their officials, referees or umpires are the worst. It’s part of the universal experience for sports fans. Still, Hernandez is up there with the most frustrating officials. He’s in the Hall of Terrible Home Plate Empires for sure.

At what point will MLB reach a point where the regular blown calls force them to keep Hernandez from working behind the plate? They haven’t gotten there yet. Fans can only hope they’re paying attention on days like this.
