A Warriors-Lakers play-in tournament matchup is looking more realistic by the day, but would it be good for the NBA? Steph Curry doesn’t seem to mind.

Curry probably felt like he could take on the world after dropping 49 points on the Oklahoma City Thunder to extend his lead for the scoring title. The race between Curry and Bradley Beal is something to watch down the stretch.

However, even more important from the league’s perspective is the prospective play-in tournament, which could feature both Curry’s Warriors and LeBron James’ Lakers. The thought that LA could slip below the No. 6 seed is shocking to say the least, but becoming more realistic by the day. Currently, the Lakers are in the No. 7 slot, a full 1.5 games behind the six-seeded Dallas Mavericks. Meanwhile, the Warriors are at No. 8.

Silence speaks louder than words at times, and in Curry’s case, he’d welcome any challenger.

What would be great for the play-in tournament would, unfortunately, potentially be a detriment in the long run. A playoffs without an extended run by James would be a first, but knocking either LeBron or Curry out could be enough for Adam Silver to end this experiment after just one season.

Despite their struggles, the Lakers would still be favored over Curry’s Warriors. Los Angeles’ strength is at the rim, where Anthony Davis reigns supreme and can take advantage of a clear weakness on Golden State’s side.

Meanwhile, James called for the creator of the play-in tournament to be fired just last week. While that’s not in his power (nor should it be), it speaks to just how quickly said idea could be taken away if it doesn’t work in the NBA’s favor.
