The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in former Illinois State quarterback Brady Davis for a tryout this upcoming weekend.

Earlier this year, the Dallas Cowboys revealed they are set at starting quarterback by signing Dak Prescott to a massive four-year contract extension. With Prescott returning from a dislocated ankle and the team losing backup Andy Dalton to the Chicago Bears in free agency, the Cowboys are looking at depth options following the NFL Draft.

The Cowboys are bringing in former Illinois State quarterback Brady Davis in for a tryout for this weekend’s rookie minicamp, per Davis’ agents at Icon Sports Consulting.

Prior to playing for the Redbirds, Davis was a quarterback for Memphis. Davis played for Illinois State in the 2018 and ’19 seasons, but did not play in 2020 due to the season not taking place a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

In his two years as quarterback at Illinois State, Davis completed 50.4-percent of his passes for 3,514 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, per ESPN. Additionally, Davis rushed for 240 yards and three scores on 105 carries.

Behind Prescott on the quarterback depth chart are Cooper Rush, Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci. Once Prescott went down with his season-ending ankle injury and Dalton suffered a concussion, the Cowboys had to start DiNucci and Gilbert.

DiNucci struggled against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8, where he completed 21-of-40 pass attempts for 180 yards in the 23-9 loss. As for Gilbert, he completed 21-of-38 of his passes for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception in their narrow 24-19 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9.

It is quite clear that head coach Mike McCarthy is not satisfied with the group, hence the tryout of Davis. It will remain to be seen if the rookie ultimately ends up with a contract.
