Dodgers pitcher Dustin May tweeted out a health update after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

The Los Angeles Dodgers received some brutal news earlier this season when it was learned Dustin May would require Tommy John surgery. The 23-year-old was off to a nice start and will now remain out well into the 2022 season.

May himself tweeted out an update from the hospital after what appears to be a successful surgery on his throwing arm. Now comes the long road to recovery.

May is a 2016 third-round pick of the Dodgers who made his MLB debut in 2019. He made 10 starts in 2020 and looked to be a key piece of the rotation in 2021. Alas, the team must adapt without him.

Tommy John surgery is unfortunately far too common among MLB pitchers. The wear and tear of years of playing the game catches up to plenty of pitchers and got to May at a young age. The only positive is that he got the surgery young and may be good to go for the remainder of his career.

The recovery time for the surgery can be anywhere from a year to 18 months. May’s youth should mean the Dodgers ease him back into action in 2022. But that will all depend on how his personal recovery goes starting Wednesday afternoon.

The first step of the process is a successful procedure. That part is complete and now May can rest and watch as the Dodgers try to climb back to the top of the National League West division.
