Are Cowboys the best fit for Richard Sherman or a reunion with Seahawks?

As Richard Sherman remains unsigned, the veteran defensive back might find familiarity on multiple fronts with the Dallas Cowboys

As NFL free agency reaches its third wave, and teams are no longer concerned about the compensatory pick formula factoring into their latest signings, Richard Sherman remains among the prized veterans still available.

Sherman, 33, might be slightly past his All-Pro prime but is still capable of playing cornerback at a high level, just one year removed from producing 18 total tackles and intercepting one pass in five games in what will presumably be his final season with the San Francisco 49ers.

So, where might Sherman land, between now and the 2021 NFL season kicking off in September?

Richard Sherman could return to Seattle if Dallas doesn’t sign him first

“He’s most likely to wind up in either Dallas or Seattle,” a current NFL head coach recently told me. “Both because of scheme fit and the mutual familiarity between him and the coaches there.”

The Cowboys might be the ideal marriage between scheme, coaching familiarity, and desperate need, in a division that features wide receivers Kenny Golladay, Terry McLaurin, DeVonta Smith, among others, for Sherman to step in and provide some veteran stability.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sherman produced a 67.2 coverage grade in 2020, while holding opposing quarterbacks to a meager 69.6 passer rating when targeting him. That kind of consistency in coverage would be a suitable counterpunch in the Cowboys’ secondary, against the dominant contingent of NFC East receivers.

Signing with the Cowboys would reunite Sherman with Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who was the Seahawks’ defensive coordinator for two seasons when Sherman was in Seattle.

Likewise, the Cowboys’ 3-4 front and Quinn’s commitment to returning to his roots as a coordinator could make Sherman an asset in helping the young players Dallas just drafted (Kelvin Joseph, Nahshon Wright, Israel Mukuamu) in the secondary up to speed on the scheme.
