Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher would like to see the Aggies revive their series with Texas, but even he knows it’s not happening.

Count Jimbo Fisher among the people who want to see the Texas A&M and Texas rivalry game come back.

The Aggie head coach appeared on KLBJ Radio in Austin and expressed his support for bringing back the game which hasn’t been played since Texas A&M joined the SEC in 2011.

“If it’s what’s best for Texas A&M, I do,” Fisher said. “We’re playing in the SEC and we’re playing in a great league. It’s a great rivalry and there’s a lot of history there and if that’s what’s best for Texas A&M we’ll do it.”

Texas A&M vs. Texas can only happen in the far future

Don’t get your hopes up, though. For one, Fisher doesn’t get to decide whether Texas A&M and Texas agree to meet up as out-of-conference foes.

Even if he did, it’s definitely not going to happen anytime soon.

“There were some things done there that are water under the bridge and I don’t know what all of that was but I know right now there’s no way that’s going to happen for ten years or so,” Fisher said. “In that time, if that’s what is best for A&M we’ll do it. We’ll do what’s best for A&M.”

What’s best for A&M is likely to not have their schedule made all the more difficult with another Power 5 battle.

The Aggies have their out-of-conference schedule filled up through 2025. The Longhorns are booked through 2026.

The idea of them meeting this decade is slim considering the marquee matchups each side already boasts. Texas A&M plays at Notre Dame in 2025, then has a home-and-home with Arizona State in 2026 and 2027.

Texas is even less likely to want an extra challenge on their schedule with Michigan in 2027, Georgia in 2028 and 2029, then Florida in 2030 and 2031. The Sun Devils are on their slate in 2032 and 2033.
