Rombauer won the 146th running of the Preakness Stakes in 2021 on May 15.

The 146th running of the Preakness Stakes belongs to Rombauer.

The underdog horse with 11-1 odds came through with a late burst to get past Midnight Bourbon and Medina Spirit.

Jockey Flavien Prat guided the horse for his first win at the Preakness in his first start, after winning the 2019 Kentucky Derby on Country House.

Mike McCarthy trained Rombauer for owners John and Diane Fradkin.

Rombauer’s time came in at 1:53.62.

Medina Spirit was the favorite to win the Preakness with 3-1 odds following its controversial Kentucky Derby victory. The Bob Baffert-trained horse finished third after trailing off late.

Midnight Bourdon pushed Medina Spirit from the get-go but didn’t have enough left to see off Rombauer’s explosive finish.

The Preakness Stakes is the second leg in the fabled Triple Crown. It takes place two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks ahead of the Belmont Stakes.

It has been run every year without stop since 1894 and dates back to 1873. Secretariat still owns the record for the quickest run at one minute and 53 seconds in 1973.

The 1 3/16 mile race has featured a purse of more than $1 million since 1997.

In 2020, Swiss Skydiver took the win for jockey Robby Albarado, trainer Keneth McPeek and owner Peter J. Callahan.
