Tyrann Mathieu sent and deleted a tweet indicating he may not be with the Kansas City Chiefs much longer.

Tyrann Mathieu signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2019 season and since then has been an All-Pro safety in addition to a champion.

2021 is now a contract year for Mathieu and the Chiefs have been creative this offseason in creating extensions for key contributors. However, the safety sent and then deleted a tweet in which he said he doesn’t expect a new contract anytime soon.

One Twitter user, known as @RealBirdLawyer, captured the exchange.

Tyrann Mathieu isn’t expecting a new contract from the Chiefs

As Mathieu said, he has been through this before. He was cut by the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, only to sign a one-year deal with the Houston Texans. There was no extension there and he ended up in Kansas City.

The Chiefs could likely figure out an extension. However, costs continue to go up and Mathieu will be 30 years old at the start of the 2022 season. The team may prefer to get cheaper and younger in the secondary with all the money committed to other stars on the roster.

Mathieu is still taking home nearly $15 million in 2021 so it’s not like he is in some bad situation. He is also not going anywhere this season as the Chiefs look for revenge after a Super Bowl loss. This is more of a 2022 problem in Kansas City.

The veteran seemed resigned to the reality situation in his since-deleted tweet. Ultimately, another great season will have plenty of teams interested in his services next year.

Every single key player in Kansas City cannot get an extension. But it is still early and things could always change with Mathieu. The front office got creative this offseason and moving some money around once again could ensure this team never gets worse from one year to the next.
