Marco Scandella of the St. Louis Blues takes the ice against the Colorado Avalanche prior to the National Anthem at Enterprise Center on May 23, 2021, in St Louis, Missouri.

This image was created during player introductions as the St. Louis Blues took the ice against the Colorado Avalanche for Game Four. I was working at ice level and shooting through a 5-inch hole in the safety glass. I utilized a slow shutter speed, 1/20th of a second to be specific and panned the camera at the same speed as Marco Scandella skating by my position. This technique keeps Marco Scandella sharp and in focus while blurring the background. This technique creates a look that helps illustrate movement and speed. The blue venue lighting added to the moody look of the image as well.

Simone Biles lands the Yurchenko double pike while competing on the vault during the 2021 GK U.S. Classic gymnastics competition at the Indiana Convention Center on May 22, 2021, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Biles became the first woman in history to land the Yurchenko double pike in competition.

Simone Biles competed for the first time in over eighteen months at the U.S Classic in Indianapolis, IN. I was told before the competition that she may attempt the Yurchenko double pike, a vault that no woman had landed before while competing. When I found out she may attempt the pike, I practiced photographing the vault a lot during warmups and before her rotation. I wasn’t sure if she would attempt it or not, but I scoped out my spot and camped out early just in case she did. She took a deep breath and ran to the vault and successfully landed the double pike. It was a really cool moment to witness, especially considering she hadn’t competed in front of a crowd in quite a while but was able to come back and make history.

Phil Mickelson of the United States celebrates on the 18th green after winning during the final round of the 2021 PGA Championship held at the Ocean Course of Kiawah Island Golf Resort on May 23, 2021, in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

The PGA Championship is truly a team effort across all of our photographers and editors throughout the entire tournament. I was asked to walk up the player’s left side with Phil Mickelson when his group reached the 18th hole. After Mickelson hit his second shot on 18 and the crowd rushed under the ropes, I knew that getting a spot for the winning moment had just drastically changed. Not only were there now thousands of fans inside the ropes, but also marshals, TV crews and law enforcement. It was chaotic to say the least. When I got to the green, I got positioned where Mickelson would be putting almost directly at me and praying that he would stay in that line as the crowd behind him became even more massive. Our team had the 18th green surrounded so the winning moment was captured from several different angles. It was a terrific ending to a very long week.

Andre Drummond of the Los Angeles Lakers attempts a shot over Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns during the second half of Game One of the Western Conference first-round playoff series at Phoenix Suns Arena on May 23, 2021, in Phoenix, Arizona. The Suns defeated the Lakers 99-90.

Due to COVID protocols for the NBA Playoffs, photographers are positioned in overhead seats and are not permitted to roam. However, this opens up the opportunity to get creative with remote cameras and get some fun shots from different angles, especially directly over the basket. This angle gives such a unique perspective of the action, one which the public can’t often see. At the Phoenix Suns arena, the key is painted black which adds to the photos and gives the players a very clean background. The rest is up to the athletes. In this image, Andre Drummond of the Los Angeles Lakers powers his way up to the basket to shoot over Chris Paul and Deandre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns. The shape of Drummond‘s outstretched legs and his facial expression as he goes up makes this image really stand out and was very pleased with how it came out.

Bubba Wallace, driver of the No. 23 DoorDash Toyota, Corey LaJoie, driver of the No. 7 Schluter Systems Chevrolet, Chris Buescher, driver of the No. 17 autoTempest Ford, and Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet, race during the NASCAR Cup Series EchoPark Texas Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas on May 23, 2021, in Austin, Texas.

NASCAR’s inaugural visit to the Circuit of the Americas was certainly a memorable one. This was shot from on top of the 251-foot tower that overlooks the whole speedway. This shooting location from up above is pretty unique for all of motorsports but throw in the colors and patterns of the track and rooster tails from the rain coming off the cars, and it all makes for a really cool photo.
