Coach K’s Duke retirement press conference started in a surprising and bizarre fashion thanks to a German Eurodance hit from 2005.

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski is on the verge of retiring as one of the greatest in history.

His retirement press conference went viral for reasons that had nothing to do with his impressive resume, though.

Instead, it was the song that introduced him that had social media in a tizzy.

That song you hear is “Everytime We Touch,” a German Eurodance hit by Cascada released in 2005. It peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year, but it’s not exactly the iconic song of the century. And it’s definitely not about basketball.

So why was it the intro song for Coach K during his retirement press conference?

Coach K chose “Everytime We Touch” because of the connection to Duke fans

It’s been an “unofficial anthem” for Duke’s student section since 2006, according to The Duke Chronicle.

Basically, the new band director wanted to modernize the music played during Duke games. “Everytime We Touch” was a hit with the students and morphed into an energizing tradition lasting more than a decade.

So it wasn’t a totally random song choice for Krzyzewski’s retirement press conference. It was a nod to the Cameron Crazies.

That’s fine, but it’s still weird they had a song introduce the head coach at all. The bizarre moment caught the eye precisely because there were about five people playing along.

If they had included a cheering student section and called Thursday’s event a rally, it might have fit better.

It was a strange sight for a press conference featuring mostly media members sitting in socially-distanced seats. It felt like that scene from Parks and Rec featuring Gloria Estefan’s “Get On Your Feet” and a whole lot of awkward.
