David Ortiz undergoes surgery related to 2019 near-fatal shooting

David Ortiz underwent surgery Wednesday to address two stomach hernias stemming from his near-fatal 2019 shooting in his native Dominican Republic.

Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz had hernia surgery on Wednesday to solve an ongoing issue stemming from his near-fatal shooting two years ago.

This surgery had been scheduled with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston since February and it was deemed as a low-risk surgery. However, the three-time World Series champion with the Red Sox will be under supervision for the next several days. He had two stomach hernias addressed that stem from his near-fatal 2019 shooting in his native Dominican Republic.

Ortiz was shot in the back at an entertainment center in Santo Domingo two years ago Wednesday. He had to have emergency surgery in the Dominican Republic capital, as well as in Boston shortly thereafter.

It feels like just yesterday, but it also feels like a lifetime ago when Ortiz was shot in the Dominican Republic. For a minute there, we thought we lost “Big Papi”, one of the greatest designated hitters in MLB history, as well as one of the most clutch performers October baseball has ever seen. Ortiz has recovered from the shooting and has done baseball studio work for FOX since his retirement.

With Ortiz being five years removed from playing for the 2016 Red Sox, he will be eligible to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in January 2022. While there is some debate if he will be a first-ballot selection, Ortiz will inevitably get in with his 541 career home runs, 10 career All-Star Game appliances and three World Series rings while starring for the Red Sox.
