Juan Montiel is a massive underdog against WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo. Charlo respects the challenge but sees flaws in Montiel.

PBC and Showtime have a strong summer lineup of boxing, but Jermall Charlo vs. Juan Montiel is the biggest gap in talent between opponents on scheduled main events. Charlo was respectful of his opponent during a recent media call and explained the deficiencies in Montiel’s game.

Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) attempts to defend his WBC middleweight title against Montiel on June 19. Everything is in Charlo’s favor, including the fight location. The fight takes place in Charlo’s hometown of Houston, TX, at the Toyota Center.

According to WynnBet.com, Montiel is a 30-1 underdog. Still, Charlo respects Montiel’s abilities.

“I know Montiel is going to bring a strong challenge and try to knock me out,” Charlo said during the media call. “You put the pressure on yourself that way, though. Normally when people talk trash, I lay them out. I’m going to be prepared. My mental has matched up with my physical ability, and I’m stronger than ever.”

Jermall Charlo is the heavy favorite heading into his title defense against Juan Montiel

Charlo may be respectful, but he has put in time studying Montiel and sees errors he can exploit.

“You know, I’ll be able to exploit those in a fight, where like, honestly, I just don’t think he’s seen a style like mine,”  said Charlo to FanSided during the call. “It’s different once you actually get in the ring with me and you see the things that I do and the way I flash my punches.

“He doesn’t know where he’s at, at certain points at a fight,” continued Charlo. “And when it comes to attacking, he doesn’t actually sits on like shots that I saw. So we get a chance to catch him coming in and catch him wanting to be strong because he’s got power.”

Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) put on a confident front despite the staggering odds against him.

“Whoever thinks this is an easy fight for Jermall doesn’t know me at all,” said Montiel. “That’s like saying a spark can’t light a forest on fire. I’m going to show on June 19 that I’m more than up to the challenge of showing who Juan Macías Montiel is.”

Montiel is fighting an uphill battle, but anything can happen in boxing. Watch Charlo vs. Montiel on Saturday, June 19, on Showtime at 8 p.m. CT.
