Former Ohio State football player Tyreke Johnson is joining the Nebraska football team.

After spending three years with the Ohio State football program, former five-star recruit Tyreke Johnson is transferring to another Big Ten school to play for Scott Frost’s Nebraska football team.

Johnson had entered the transfer portal back in May. He announced he will join the Cornhuskers on social media Sunday. According to the 247Sports Composite, Johnson was a five-star safety in the 2018 recruiting class out of Jacksonville, Florida. He was the No. 2 safety prospect in the country, the No. 5 player from Florida and the No. 21 overall player nationally in his scholastic year.

A lack of playing time in Columbus contributed to Johnson’s decision to transfer from Ohio State.

Nebraska football: Tyreke Johnson leaves Ohio State football for Cornhuskers

A big reason why Johnson is leaving the Ohio State program is he struggled to see the field. He redshirted during his freshman season of 2018. He only played in four games over the last two seasons, despite enrolling early out of high school. Ohio State’s defensive backfield prominently featured outstanding players like Damon Arnette, Jeff Okudah and Shaun Wade during that time.

By going to Nebraska, Johnson should be able to play right away. The Cornhuskers have not been a bowl-caliber team since Frost returned to coach his alma mater. While Nebraska is not expected to contend in the Big Ten West this year, they can be a few wins better and push for a winning record if all goes according to plan in Lincoln. Maybe Johnson has great success with the Blackshirts?

Nebraska getting a former five-star to transfer into the program from Ohio State is a huge deal.
