France take on Germany on Tuesday in one of the most anticipated group stage matches at Euro 2020. Here’s what you need to know before tuning in.

France and Germany are soccer heavyweights who typically meet in the latter stages of a major tournament.

Not so when it comes to Euro 2020.

The European powerhouses were drawn into Group F, along with defending European champions Portugal and Hungary, in what has widely been dubbed the tournament’s “Group of Death.”

That means France, the defending World Cup champions, and Germany, a four-time World Cup winner, meet Tuesday at the Allianz Arena in Munich to open their respective European Championship campaigns.

The sides have plenty of history and bad blood between them. In fact, the last meeting between France and Germany came in the semifinals at Euro 2016. Antoine Griezmann tallied twice for France in a 2-0 victory over then-World Cup champion Germany in Marseille.

German manager Joachim Low told reporters on Monday that his team is ready for the big match.

“Team spirit is really excellent, really, very, very good,” he said. “Everyone is, of course, very hungry for success at this European Championship and that actually makes me confident and lets me sleep well.”

Die Mannschaft, despite their strong soccer tradition, face a French side who remain the best team in the world. Les Blues are good enough to field two competitive starting lineups with striker Kylian Mbappe the most in-form player in the world.

But team chemistry remains an issue after striker Olivier Giroud said last week that Mbappe doesn’t pass to him enough, comments that continue to be a major distraction in the French camp.

France manager Didier Deschamps, who is looking to become the first person ever to win the World Cup and Euros as player and head coach, was more focused on Germany’s strikers than his own.

“There are players like [Timo] Werner or [Leroy] Sane who have a very different playing style and tomorrow we will see who is playing in attack for Germany,” he told reporters. “Their attackers are important for the German team, and we have to try stop them having an impact on the game and how successful we are depends how we move and are positioned on the pitch.”
