The Cowboys don’t deserve to be called Super Bowl favorites, but they are a serious dark horse to emerge as the best team in the NFL this season.

Owner/General Manager Jerry Jones wants the Cowboys to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders each and every season. That label might be a bit strong for the 2021 version of his team, but there are several big reasons why Dallas could make a run towards an improbable NFL title this season.

The roster is not short on star power. Luminaries like Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott, and Zak Martin still patrol the sidelines in Big D. The questions surrounding the Cowboys center more around the depth of their roster. If things go right at the top, those questions could become moot.

Reason 1: Dak Prescott is just that good

It is really difficult for any team to win a Super Bowl title in the modern NFL without an elite quarterback. Fortunately for the Cowboys, they don’t have to endeavor to become an exception to that rule.

A healthy and motivated Prescott is a solid bet to end up as one of the top-10 quarterbacks in the league when the reason season is complete. It’s not out of the question that he could go on a roll and put in an MVP-caliber season. That high ceiling at the game’s most important position gives the Cowboys a chance to win every game they play.

The simplest way for Dallas to make a lengthy postseason run is for Prescott to get hot at the right time. If Mike McCarthy and his coaching staff can find a way to get their quarterback to play his best football in the playoffs they’re going to be a very tough out for any competitor. Cowboys fans shouldn’t rule out the idea that Prescott can get so hot that it ends up with a Lombardi Trophy.
