The Kansas City Chiefs have a looming decision to make about Tyrann Mathieu, but as far as Patrick Mahomes is concerned, he’s not going anywhere.

Mathieu is a free agent at the end of this season, meaning Brett Veach will have a rather large decision to make about a key piece of the Chiefs defense. Veach always seems to make the right move, so if he sees Mathieu as part of Kansas City’s future, expect him to do whatever cap gymnastics necessary to keep him with the Chiefs.

But for now, Mathieu is in a contract year. He’s made his intentions clear on several occasions, hoping to stay with the Chiefs and chase rings for the foreseeable future.

Is that realistic, though? Patrick Mahomes seems to think so.

Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes wants Tyrann Mathieu to stay put

While Mahomes captains the Chiefs offense, and is already cemented as one of the most talented quarterbacks we’ve ever seen, he knows he can’t reach his ultimate goal without a productive defense. Football is a team game at the highest level, and if Mahomes can’t get the ball back at a consistent rate, the Chiefs will fall short.

Mathieu remains one of the more productive safeties in the game. He is 29 entering this season, though. That’s what makes Veach’s decision a tough one. He knows he doesn’t want to sign Mathieu to a long-term deal if that means deteriorating value on the latter part of that contract.

The Chiefs are too talented to waste time. As much as they think having Mahomes in tow for the next decade will lead to constant Super Bowl contention, nothing is guaranteed in this league. Just ask…the 2020 Chiefs.
