There are many heated international soccer rivalries, but few of them have the history of England versus Scotland.

England and Scotland have played each other more than any other nation, facing off in 113 official matches dating back to 1863, the first soccer match ever played between two nations.

The Three Lions have the better overall record with 48 wins to Scotland’s 41. There have been 24 draws, only three of them goalless.

That means expect two teams taking the field at London’s Wembley Stadium seeking the win. England, 1-0 winners against Croatia, while Scotland were defeated 2-0 by the Czech Republic.

“It’s hugely special for everybody involved,” England manager Gareth Southgate told reporters Tuesday when asked about the game, “and especially the supporters of both teams.”

Along with Wales and Northern Ireland, England and Scotland are part of Great Britain. The four, known as the Home Nations, were allowed to compete as separate teams when FIFA was established in 1904.

England, fourth-place finishers at the 2018 World Cup, are the better team. A win Friday against the Tartan Army, who are playing in their first major international tournament since the 1998 World Cup, would qualify them out of Group D and into the knockout stage.
