Here is what a contract extension for Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu could look like.

Entering the final season of his three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, we should expect All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu to be receiving an extension at some point down the line from them.

Mathieu has been a First-Team All-Pro in his first two seasons with the Chiefs. He is slated to make $14,550,000 in base salary in his age-29 season out of LSU. Though safety is a historically undervalued position in football, Mathieu has shown us throughout his NFL career that he is worth every penny. It would serve the Chiefs to figure out how to extend their superstar defensive back.

At this time, the highest paid safety in football is Denver Broncos standout Justin Simmons. The former third-round pick out of Boston College has the highest average annual value of any safety in the league with his four-year deal worth $61 million and $32.1 million of that amount fully being guaranteed. Mathieu is playing out the final season of a three-year, $42 million contract.

Given that Mathieu is the better and more productive player over Simmons, he would command something along the lines of a four-year extension worth around $65 million and roughly $35 million fully guaranteed. This would make Mathieu the highest paid safety in football once he eclipses what the Broncos are paying Simmons. Mathieu will be very pricey, but he is so worth it.

If Mathieu balls out in the final year of his Chiefs deal, he will be the highest-paid safety in football.
