3 offseason moves the Brooklyn Nets need to make
2. Re-sign Spencer Dinwiddie
Spencer Dinwiddie is set to decline his $12.3 million player option and become an unrestricted free agent. That doesn’t mean he won’t return to the Nets for 2021-22.
The guard played in only three games because of a season-ending ACL injury in January. That was a disappointing development for a player who really seemed to hit his stride last year. He averaged a career-best 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game in the 2019-20 season.
Of course, Brooklyn’s lineup has changed a bit since Dinwiddie went down injured. James Harden arrived and Bruce Brown established himself as a key figure in the lineup. Brown is one of several free agents who could also end up re-signing.
Dinwiddie may end up costing quite a bit on the open market, which could limit Brooklyn’s interest in bringing him back. Still, he’s a talented player who could be the perfect complement to the Big 3 of Kevin Durant, Harden and Irving. A lineup including those four would be formidable.
Caution over his return from an ACL tear might limit the actual market for his services. Dinwiddie might decide he has the best chance to win back with Brooklyn. Either way, the Nets should at least try to hold onto him for next year’s run at glory.
