Watch: Daryl Morey didn’t hold back about Ben Simmons’ future with 76ers
Daryl Morey said the inevitable when it comes to the future of the Philadelphia 76ers and Ben Simmons.
Everyone knows Ben Simmons is on the trade block after his poor playoff performance this year. Rumors abound, but Philadelphia 76ers President Daryl Morey refused to directly address Simmons’ trade status.
“Any move that will help our team win the championship or improve our odds, we will look at and do if it makes sense to do that,” Morey said during his media availability on Tuesday.
Reading between the lines, it’s clear Morey will look to move Simmons if he can get valuable assets in return that help the team’s roster construction moving forward.
NBA trade rumors: Ben Simmon’s trade value has plummeted but 76ers will explore moving former No. 1 pick
When pressed on the issue of whether or not he will look at the value of Simmons as well as any other players on the Philadelphia roster, Morey gave a snarky response.
“So you just defined the job of a General Manager, which is to assess everything, assess every player on the roster, figure out what is best to do with them to help us win the championship,” Morey said in response to Howard Eskin’s question. “So yes, I’m going to operate as the General Manager of the 76ers and I appreciate you defining my job description.”
Morey can dodge questions all he wants, but it’s abundantly clear the 76ers either need to help Simmons significantly improve his shooting or find him a new home. There are several teams that would be good fits for the defensive specialist, but Simmons’ trade value is a big question mark right now. Evidently, Morey does not what to give any updates on whether he is shopping the former No. 1 overall pick, but logic suggests he must be.
It is worth noting the Morey himself did not draft Ben Simmons, nor did he hire head coach Doc Rivers. Needless to say, he faces an important offseason ahead, one that could alter the course of the Philadelphia 76ers franchise moving forward.
