While some Barcelona fans have been nervous that Lionel Messi could be leaving Catalonia this summer, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

The reports and rumors continue to swirl surrounding the future of superstar player Lionel Messi, who will no question go down as one of the best soccer players the world has ever seen. While Messi is helping Argentina in the Copa America tournament over in Brazil, his contract situation with FC Barcelona remains in flux.

Per insider Fabrizio Romano, however, it’s looking like things are about to come to a solution. Per Romano, Messi and the higher ups at Barcelona have agreed to a contract extension through the 2022-23 season.

Lionel Messi will reportedly stay at Barcelona until at least June of 2023

This of course is welcome news for everyone who supports the La Liga and Catalonian giants. Messi has been with the Barcelona senior team since 2004, making more than 500 appearances. He’s won countless trophies with the club, including La Liga, the Champions League and more.

However, there’s no denying there’s been plenty of issues between him and the team’s executives. Barcelona has struggled mightily in recent years during transfer windows, which really has upset Messi. Last summer, the team basically kicked Luis Suarez out the door. Suarez joined Atletico Madrid and helped the club win the league title this spring. Barcelona fans couldn’t believe it.

Messi has been linked with potential moves to Manchester City, PSG and other powerhouse clubs. Unfortunately for the supporters of those teams, Messi appears set on continuing his career in Barcelona with the organization he loves so much. Imagining Messi in another jersey other than Barca’s just wouldn’t sit well. Now, we won’t have to worry about that for a couple more years.
