Bill Moos is out as athletic director and Nebraska football coach Scott Frost could be next.

Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos is retiring, according to the Journal Star. With Moos retiring, it’s fair to wonder if the football coach he hired, Scott Frost, is living on borrowed time.

Moos had been in Lincoln since 2017. He was the athletic director at Montana, Oregon and Washington State. While no reason for his departure has been specified, Moos hired Frost as the head football coach, Fred Hoiberg as the men’s basketball coach and Will Bolt as the baseball coach. Moos hoped to stay through the end of his contract, which expired on Dec. 31, 2022.

Nebraska football: With Bill Moos out as athletic director, is Scott Frost next?

Admittedly, it will be excruciatingly painful for the Nebraska fanbase if one of their own is terminated as the head football coach. Frost quarterbacked the Cornhuskers to national titles in the latter stages of the Tom Osborne era. Unfortunately, he has yet to finish better than fifth place in the Big Ten West, has never won more than five games in a year or even been to a bowl game.

This will be Frost’s fourth year leading his alma mater and is seeking his first winning season. While some of last year’s issues can be chalked up to a global pandemic and a condensed Big Ten schedule, Frost must get the Cornhuskers to a bowl game this season. Because whoever replaces Moos did not hire him, his successor would have no personal investment in Frost as a head coach. If he cannot get it done in 2021, he may be fired.

The only way Frost keeps his job beyond 2021 is if he leads the Cornhuskers back to a bowl game and shows significant improvement.
