Should Kansas City Chiefs sign Golden Tate?
NFL training camps will be opening soon. Should the defending AFC champion Chiefs add another target for quarterback Patrick Mahomes to take advantage of?
To say the Kansas City Chiefs are out for revenge this upcoming season would be to dramatically understate their intended goal.
Not only are the Chiefs planning on rectifying a Super Bowl embarrassment, but the team is actively flirting with making an outright prediction that they’ll go 20-0 in 2021.
To get there, the Chiefs might dabble in the realm of free agency to continue adding to a roster that is already busting at the seams with new talent. Kyle Long and Orlando Brown were added to the offensive line, along with rookie Creed Humphrey. Investing in protecting Patrick Mahomes was a key objective this offseason, but what about adding another weapon to his arsenal?
In a recent piece regarding one last move each of the 32 clubs should make, ESPN Insider Field Yates offered his opinion as to who the Kansas City Chiefs should add to their roster:
"The Chiefs are a little thin at wide receiver, though it might not matter much given their star pass-catching duo of Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. That said, (Golden) Tate would provide something a little different than what Kansas City’s receiving group is largely constructed of (ample speed): a compact wideout who excels in the short passing game with run-after-the-catch skills. And for Tate, the chance to win should be enticing."
It’s sound thinking.

The 11-year pro, a second-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2010, has now performed for four different franchises. His regular-season resume reads 695 receptions for 8,278 yards and 46 touchdowns. He’s also played in 11 postseason games for the Seahawks, Lions and Eagles and won a Super Bowl with Pete Carroll’s club.
Tate spent the past two seasons with the New York Giants and pulled down just 84 passes for 1,064 yards and eight scores in 23 games with the club. His 35 catches this past season was his lowest total since 2011 (35) with Seattle. Last month, the former Golden Domer (via Kevin Patra of NFL.com) expressed some interest in three teams.
“I would love to go back home to Tennessee,” explained the seasoned wideout. “Indy, over with Carson Wentz. Obviously, the L.A. Rams would be fantastic with Stafford. I had my best years with Stafford. I really like the entire NFC West, to be honest.”

While a veteran such as Tate would likely help any offense based on his years in the league and postseason experience, Andy Reid’s team may have much more pressing needs when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. It was Steve Spagnuolo’s unit that keyed a late surge in 2019 and the Chiefs went on to win Super Bowl LIV.
Be it another wide receiver or a cornerback like veteran Buster Skrine, is there really a wrong answer?
