Braves pitcher Max Fried became the hero at the plate with a walk-off after the umps took a game-winning run off the board against the Marlins.

The Braves beat the Marlins with a walk-off on Sunday. In fact, they did it twice.

With the game tied at seven in the bottom of the 10th inning, Austin Riley took off for home plate when a pitch got away from catcher Sandy Leon. He slid into home and appeared to win the game for Atlanta.

However, the celebrations had to be cut short when the Marlins challenged the play and the umpires opted to overturn the call on the field, ruling Riley out.

So the Braves simply found a new, arguably better, way to win the game.

Max Fried, who is scheduled to pitch Monday’s game against the Pirates, came in to pinch hit for Will Smith. He may be critical on the mound, but he proved he was up for the task at the plate as well. He made contact, dinking the ball into shallow center to drive in the winning run.

Miami will regret their decision to walk Kevan Smith to load the bases ahead of Fried’s at-bat, that’s for sure.

Max Fried saved the day for the Braves in a dramatic finish

That wild finish was the end of what had been an incredible ride for Atlanta.

They gave up three runs on two homers in the top of the ninth, entering the bottom of the ninth trailing 7-3.

The ninth-inning rally was a doozy as Orlando Arcia singled, Abraham Almonte doubled and Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the four runs necessary to tie.

The Braves grabbed the 8-7 victory, taking the series 2-1. They are no 41-42 and still looking to challenge the Mets at the top of the NL East.
