Noah Syndergaard calls out Joe West and umpires for awful call against Mets

New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard criticized the umpiring crew during Sunday’s game against the New York Yankees.

The New York Mets‘ start to their Fourth of July doubleheader against the New York Yankees did not get off to the greatest start. In the top of the third inning, Brandon Nimmo hit a ground ball down the first base foul line and had to race Yankees first baseman Luke Voit to the bag. At the time, Nimmo was called out, but the umpiring crew, led by Joe West, upheld the call even though replay showed that the Mets outfielder was actually safe by the slimmest of margins.

Mets manager Luis Rojas was not the only one who was upset about the call. Pitcher Noah Syndergaard tweeted his displeasure with the call, simply asking “why have replay?”

Syndergaard is not the only one asking what the point of a replay review is if the umpires still get it wrong. There were many baseball fans, not just Mets fans, that echoed that very sentiment.

While the Mets did trail the Yankees 4-1 at one point during the game, they were able to chase ace Gerrit Cole from the game in the fourth inning after surrendering RBI singles to catcher Tomas Nido and Nimmo to cut the deficit to 4-3. The Mets went on to tie the game shortly after Cole left, as shortstop Francisco Lindor knocked in a run off relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga.

Regardless of the end result of the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, fans are not going to forget about the controversial call that cost the Mets a baserunner in the third inning.
