Trevor Lawrence contract details: Jags No. 1 pick signs ‘unprecedented’ rookie deal

The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed rookie Trevor Lawrence to a contract, and the language is…a lot to keep track of.

Let’s hope the Jaguars and Urban Meyer read the fine print in Lawrence’s contract demands.

On the surface, Lawrence’s deal isn’t much more than your usual contract for a top pick in the NFL Draft. However, a deep dive shows Lawrence and his agent used the Jaguars to get an ‘unprecedented‘ rookie contract.

• Signing bonus paid within 15 business days.
• No offset language.
• Majority of compensation in 2022, ‘23, ‘24 in Roster Bonus. Earned if on 90-man roster on 3rd day after mandatory camp reporting date.
• Earns roster bonus even if on active NFI.

The deal is for four seasons and $36.8 million, with $24 million of that guaranteed.

The Jags are a work in progress, and Lawrence and his agent know this. They are in no position to negotiate with the best talent in the draft, and arguably the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck. Whatever the Clemson product wants, he gets. And that’s completely fair for now.

Meyer brings an intriguing personality to the fold. It’s his first time coaching in the pros, and there’s no telling how it’ll go. He and Lawrence have a long leash together. This team went 1-15 last season.

Expect Jacksonville to show some flashes next season, even if they fail to make much noise in the AFC South. Lawrence has poise in the pocket and, assuming he stays healthy, should figure things out by the second half of his rookie campaign. He’s the unquestioned starter right away.
