The Dallas Cowboys stand as one of the most talented teams in the NFC, and these three players will be fighting for the jobs in training camp.
The Dallas Cowboys‘ 2020 campaign was marked by two things. One was an abysmal defense, and the other was quarterback Dak Prescott’s season-ending leg injury in Week 5. With Prescott on track to be healthy for Week 1 and a new defensive coordinator in Dan Quinn, things are looking up heading into Mike McCarthy’s second season as head coach.
The Cowboys have a case as the most talented team in the NFC East , and more broadly one of the most-talented teams in the NFC. If key players can remain healthy, the annual burden of expectations may actually be met by results this year.
But as training camp looms in a few weeks, the Cowboys will have to find their best 53 to go into the season with. On that note, these three players will be fighting for their jobs when the team returns to their typical camp home in Oxnard, California. Oh, and they’ll welcome HBO’s “Hard Knocks” to chronicle things.

Prescott’s injury and Andy Dalton’s concussion opened the door for DiNucci to start a game as a rookie last year. It did not go well, as he completed 21 of 40 passes for 180 yards with two lost fumbles in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was in over his head, as owner Jerry Jones acknowledged and DiNucci himself has since admitted.
“I feel like it wasn’t me out there,” DiNucci said, via Andrew Oliveros of SI.com.
DiNucci will be competing with Garrett Gilbert and Cooper Rush to back up Prescott. The Cowboys will likely only keep three quarterbacks, so someone will be the odd-man-out. For what it’s worth, Gilbert looks like the front runner to be No. 2 on the depth chart right now.
DiNucci will have an opportunity during camp and preseason games to show his limited action as a rookie indeed “wasn’t him”. But if a veteran is added at some point, DiNucci is first in line among the incumbent Cowboys’ backup quarterbacks to be gone.
