As the 2021 Summer Olympics draw near, countries prepare to send their athletes to the global event.

Now that the Summer Olympic games are confirmed, countries around the world are preparing to send their best of the best to compete in the event that was almost canceled altogether just five months ago. The event will take place in Tokyo, Japan beginning July 23, 2021, and ending August 8, 2021.

Japan will play host to over 11,091 athletes from 205 countries and two independent groups which include 10 refugee Olympic athletes and one independent Olympic athlete. The games will consist of ‎339 events in 33 sports and 46 sport disciplines, utilizing 37 venues across the island nation. The games will also include five new sports.

With the state of the global pandemic and the rise of new variants of the Covid-19 virus, safely hosting the event will be no small feat. Still, the Olympic torch relay is well underway and it appears that the event will take place as planned.
