Nils Politt persisted in a breakaway before sprinting ahead in the last 10 kilometers to win  Stage 12 on 8 July at the 108th Tour de France.

Nils Politt managed to stay in a breakaway for most of Thursday’s stage despite crosswinds and attacks, before sprinting away in the last ten kilometers to win the 159.4-kilometer-long stage from Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux to Nimes.

It’s a  massive moment in Politt’s career who had previously only won one stage at the 2018 Deutschland Tour and came second at 2019’s Paris-Roubaix.

Nils Politt, Team Bora-Hansgrohe and Peter Sagan dropping out

Politt raced for Team Bora- Hansgrohe who opened the day with the announcement that fan-favorite Peter Sagan was dropping out of the race due to knee pain from injuries in the crash with Caleb Ewan on Stage 3.

Several fan-favorites have not fared well during the tour this year. Arnaud Demare and Bryan Coquard have left the race.

Others have lost valuable time for the overall general classification including David Gaudu.

Mathieu van der Poel has left the race to train for the Olympics instead.

Marc Soler, Jasha Sutterlin, Caleb Ewan and others have left due to injuries.

Tour de France standings after Stage 12

Tadej Pogacar, current race leader and last year’s winner, was confirmed to be racing at La Vuelta this year.

He and others in the race for the yellow jersey managed to finish the stage without losing much time, keeping the standings for the overall race lead, much the same from Stage 11.

Pogacar currently leads with Rigoberto Uran in second place at five minutes behind and Jonas Vingegaard in third place.

Mark Cavendish leads the sprint points classification while Nairo Quintana still leads the mountain points classification.

Pogacar also retains the white jersey for the best young rider.
