Cubs fans’ worst nightmare could be coming true at the trade deadline

There is a nightmare scenario for the Chicago Cubs fanbase at the 2021 MLB trade deadline.

With the Chicago Cubs expected to be sellers at the 2021 MLB trade deadline, their rabid fanbase will lose its collective mind if two of its best players are shipped across town to the rival White Sox.

Yes, there is a possibility the Cubs could strike a deal with the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox. It doesn’t happen often, but the two famously worked together on the George Bell for Sammy Sosa trade and most recently the Jose Quintana for Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease trade.

The White Sox are a serious contender to win the World Series this year and they could go all-in with a big splash at the trade deadline which could mean making a move for Kris Bryant.

Chicago Cubs: What is the nightmare trade destination for this selling team?

The 2016 NL MVP is in the final year of his contract and has been the subject of trade rumors for the better part of two seasons. The White Sox could use his bat in the middle of the lineup and his glove plays at all three outfield positions and both corner infield positions.

As much as it would pain Cubs fans to see Bryant on the Sox, they do possess the type of high-end prospects the Cubs would love to get for the pending free agent in Andrew Vaughn and Jake Berger. While the Cubs will want Michael Kopech, it’s likely the White Sox hang up the phone when his name comes up in conversations.

But the Sox could go even further and entice the Cubs with a package that also includes Craig Kimbrel who may be the hottest commodity on the trade market.

Trading for Kimbrel will drastically improve the White Sox bullpen and give Tony LaRussa the ability to use Liam Hendriks in high-leverage situations in the 7th and 8th innings with Kimbrel owning the 9th.

If the White Sox were to add a former NL MVP and arguably the best closer in baseball, it could give them their first World Series title since 2005. All the while, Cubs fans may be watching meaningless baseball on the North Side.
