Twitter couldn’t believe Italy’s win over England in the final of the 2020 Euros that came down to penalty kicks.
The final match of the 2020 Euros was decided on Sunday, and although it took 30 minutes of extra time and penalty kicks, we finally have a champion. After falling behind 1-0 in the second minute, Italy stormed back with a second-half goal from Leonard Bonucci in the 67th minute to tie things up, ultimately beating England on PKs to win the tournament.
It was an incredibly dramatic affair, as the Italians once again prevailed on PKs for the second time in the tournament.
Domenico Berardi and Harry Kane both drilled their first penalties. Andrea Belotti’s penalty was saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, giving the English the 2-1 advantage after Harry Maguire calmly made his attempt. Leonardo Bonucci drew Italy level, and Marcus Rashford missed his PK off the goalpost.
Federico Benardeschi made his PK right down the middle to give Italy a 3-2 lead, while Gianluigi Donnarumma saved another kick from Jadon Sancho to keep the Italians in front. Jorginho was unable to capitalize and win the tournament for Italy, but Donnarumma was up to the challenge again, saving another penalty from Bukayo Saka to defeat England on the final PK, 3-2.
Twitter blew up reacting to an insane penalty shootout to decide the 2020 Euros
As you would expect, Twitter reacted to each and every penalty with rapturous glee and unmitigated horror, depending on which side you were supporting.
The responses were abject excitement, and of course the jokes weren’t far behind:
