MLB fans react to Padres’ Jake Cronenworth hitting for the cycle

In less than one year after making his MLB debut, Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth adds a cycle to his All-Star campaign.

San Diego Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth has become just the third player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. The All-Star completed the historic feat on Friday against the Nationals in Washington.

He got all the difficult stuff out of the way before taking care of arguably the easiest of hits to finish it off. Cronenworth notched a two-run double in his first at-bat, following that up with an RBI triple, a solo home run and finally an infield single to complete the cycle in just the sixth inning of San Diego’s route of Washington.

It’s one of the more unique cycle feats in baseball, as the second Padres player to complete this milestone is Cronenworth’s teammate, Wil Myers, who currently has a career-high six RBIs on the night. It’s also the first San Diego cycle to take place outside of Coors Field.

The 27-year-old Cronenworth has made a huge impact for the Padres after getting called up to the big leagues last summer. In 386 plate appearances before Friday’s game, he slashed .276/.350/.459 with 12 home runs and 34 RBIs. He’s also played in 91 of the Padres’ 93 games this season.

On a team loaded with star power, Cronenworth has quickly made a name for himself as a key piece to the San Diego’s success. The Padres will need more of the same going forward, as the team is currently six games behind the division-leading Giants, but they’re 3.5 games up on the second NL Wild Card spot.

Cronenworth also fared well in the Padres’ playoff run in 2020. In six postseason games, he slashed .389/.542/.667 with one home run and three RBIs in 24 plate appearances.

It’s been a great start for the former seventh-round pick, and if he keeps this up, Cronenworth will make plenty of All-Star appearances for the remainder of his career.
