Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castaño was a classic but ended as a draw

Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castaño fought in an epic undisputed super welterweight title fight. It came down to the scores, and a split draw was the decision.

Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castaño more than lived up to the hype as both boxers gave it their all for the chance to become the undisputed super welterweight champion. Unfortunately, neither man walked away with that title.

At the start of the fight, the AT&T Center crowd in San Antonio, Texas, was all for their in-state hero Charlo. By the end of the fight, Castaño won many of them over with his fighting spirit.

Charlo was the favorite, even though Castaño was undefeated. The size advantage and perceived power difference gave Charlo the edge, but Castaño proved to have a chin and stout punches of his own.

This one looked like it was going to end early. Charlo battered Castaño for the first two rounds and hurt Castaño in round 2 with a counter left hook. Castaño looked out of his league, but he worked his way into the fight and looked to take it over at one point.

Castaño’s trademark work rated started to compound. He hurt Charlo in round 3 and piled on the points, but Charlo came alive from time to time when it looked like he was falling too far behind.

Charlo almost ended the show in round 10. Castaño was starting to have his way, but Charlo’s left hands started to find Castaño’s head at will. Castaño’s legs looked like rubber, and his output dwindled.

Castaño rebounded well in round 11, but Charlo took round 12 on FanSided’s scorecard. The back and forth action made this a Fight of the Year contender.

The fight went the distance, and all ears opened up to listen to the scorecards. The judges scored the fight 114-113 Castaño, 117-111 Charlo, 114-114, making it a split draw.

It was a close fight, and a draw is acceptable, but 117-111 for Charlo is ludicrous. According to an online Showtime poll, 79% of viewers thought Castaño won the fight.

Charlo and Castaño hold all the belts between them, and a rematch would be a hot ticket. Hopefully, the politics of boxing doesn’t hinder these two meeting again soon.
