Some deadbeat in the left field bleachers of Yankee Stadium plunked Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo, and Aaron Boone wants him thrown in jail.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have a tense rivalries with passionate fans.

Sometimes that borders on the insane. Sometimes it sails clear over the line.

On Saturday night, the latter was the case. An unidentified idiot sitting in left field during a downpour — which resulted in a six-inning win for the Yankees — decided to uncork his best heave at Boston left fielder Alex Verdugo. Verdugo was struck and unsurprisingly turned around in rage.

Eventually, order was restored and the aforementioned idiot was brought out of the building by security.

After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was asked by media for his understanding of what transpired. He didn’t mince words, saying he hopes the fan guilty of plunking Verdugo is behind bars.

Whether or not the fan has or will be charged remains a mystery, but it certainly could happen. In all likelihood, the perpetrator will be banned from the stadium either for the remainder of the season or perhaps for life. Either way, he won’t be coming to watch the Yankees any time soon.

Meanwhile, New York is desperately trying to catch up in the standings. Boston maintains a 1.5-game lead on the second-place Tampa Bay Rays, while the Yankees are a distant fourth in the AL East, eight games off the pace.

In the wild card, New York is 4.5 games behind the Oakland Athletics, who they see out west for four games in August.
