Florida Gators head coach Dan Mullen isn’t buying the hype around the Georgia Bulldogs, taking a shot at the SEC East rival at SEC Media Days.

Georgia may be the favorites to win the SEC East in 2021, but Florida’s Dan Mullen isn’t having any of it.

Mullen had a snarky response when asked about the Bulldogs being the team to beat during SEC Media Days.

“Didn’t they say that last year?” Mullen said, per Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel.

Florida coach Dan Mullen rejects the Georgia hype in the SEC East

There’s a slight hitch in Mullen’s perception of Georgia as the favorite in the division. Last year, Florida was voted No. 1 in the East thanks to a tiebreaker with more first-place votes than the Bulldogs. So it’s not like the media was giving Georgia an edge.

The Gators went on to prove that prediction right by winning the SEC East thanks in part to a resounding 44-28 victory over Kirby Smart’s squad.

Then again, Georgia is expected to contend for an SEC title this year, while Florida is expected to take a step back. The Gators have lost quarterback Kyle Trask and top targets Kadarius Toney and Kyle Pitts.

Meanwhile, Georgia returns one of the nation’s best receiving corps, with George Pickens and Kearis Jackson joined by big-time transfer Arik Gilbert. JT Daniels also looks ready to take the Bulldog passing game up a notch.

So Mullen gets to play the underdog card coming into this season while also having the luxury of pointing to the scoreboard in 2020.

Florida and Georgia have won the same number of SEC East titles in the last six seasons, with three each.
