Tennis player, Coco Guaff, USA Gymnast alternate Kara Eaker and Katie Lou Samuelson both tested positive and are ruled out for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

COVID-19 cases have been gradually increasing as the Olympics creep closer and closer to the Opening Ceremony. NPR reported athletes being diagnosed with just days to spare in the Olympic Village despite testing negative before traveling to Tokyo. While that is occurring in the village, in the US, athletes have been dropping out for the very same reasons.

Several Team USA athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 before the 2021 Olympics even started

With two days to spare before the United States arrive to Tokyo, the number has increased to three known cases. Coco Gauff tested positive on Sunday, resulting in her having no choice but to drop out of the Olympics.

Just one day later, a gymnast was reported to test positive. It would then be reported by ESPN that the gymnast was reserve Kara Eaker. Just a few hours later, it was then reported that Katie Lou Samuelson tested positive and will be dropping out of the 3×3 Basketball Tournament. Samuelson was also fully vaccinated, however that doesn’t mean that she’s immune from contracting other variants of the virus.

In addition, Zach LaVine has entered the health and safety protocols and will not travel with Team USA to Tokyo. However, the way this was reported seems to indicate an exposure rather than a positive test and it seems like he could rejoin the team at some point.

On Saturday evening it was reported that Bryson DeChambeau had tested positive for COVID-19 and would not be able to compete for Team USA Golf in the 2021 Olympics Patrick Reed will replace him on the Team USA roster.

The current count of American athletes who have tested positive sits at four. But with the current climate in the Olympic Village and abroad showing signs of a surge, who knows how the competition will fare from a health and safety standpoint.
