Ray Allen took to Instagram to give us a lesson that many of us probably haven’t heard in a while: wearing a helmet saves lives.

Retired NBA star and two-time NBA Champion Ray Allen was just going on a simple bike ride when he faced what many of us probably experienced in our youth — a bike accident that could have been a lot worse if he wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Allen explained how the whole accident went down in his post, stating that he was on the end of his bike ride when he moved out of the way from an approaching car. By the time he moved, he was face to face with a tree branch. With no time to spare, he took a tumble, but came out mostly unscathed, save for a few bruises and scratches.

Ray Allen gives us all a lesson on bike safety and why wearing a helmet should be the standard

What we usually don’t realize in bike accidents is how dangerous they really are. We usually attribute dangerous accidents with motorcycles, ATVs and dune buggies. But in 2020 alone, there were 857 cyclists killed by drivers in the U.S. according to Outside. This makes it all the scarier to think that this could have been fatal or detrimental to Allen’s wellbeing.

One of the biggest takeaways is wear a helmet! Another takeaway is that we need to put a bounty out on tree branches after this travesty. But, the bright side is it’s his birthday today, so here’s to hoping he recovers and enjoys his 46th icing up and avoiding any more dreaded tree branches.
