The Alabama football program landed a huge commitment over the weekend in the form of four-star linebacker Shawn Murphy.

With linebacker Shawn Murphy committing to the Alabama football team on Sunday, the Crimson Tide continues to soar up recruiting rankings for 2022.

The 6-foot-2 and 215-pound linebacker from Manassas, Virginia had 45 official offers before picking the Tide on Sunday. According to the 247Sports Composite, Murphy is the No. 2 player from Virginia, the No. 8 linebacker in the country and the No. 66 player nationally for 2022. Murphy said he picked Alabama because he believes he can be best developed in their defense.

With his high-profile commitment, Alabama improves to No. 5 nationally for 2022, as well as No. 2 overall in the SEC.

Alabama football soars up recruiting rankings after landing LB Shawn Murphy

Entering the last week of July, Alabama has 12 hard commits for 2022, including edge defender Jeremiah Alexander from Alabaster and quarterback Ty Simpson from Martin, Tennessee. Murphy is the sixth-highest-rated recruit in this cycle for Alabama and is one of nine four-star recruits committed to the Crimson Tide. Alabama has ample time left to keep building its recruiting class.

The only teams ranked ahead of Alabama thus far in the cycle are Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame and LSU in that order. Alabama only trails LSU by a few points in the recruiting rankings. It should be noted that LSU has three more commitments over Alabama at this time. The Crimson Tide is several points ahead of Georgia for the third-best class in the SEC for the 2022 cycle.

As long as Alabama keeps adding four-stars like Murphy, they could push for the No. 1 spot.
