Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh is a fan of College Football Playoff expansion.

If anybody would be in favor of College Football Playoff expansion, Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh would have to be right up there.

While Harbaugh has had some success leading his alma mater since 2015, the Wolverines have not only failed to win a single Big Ten title, but they have never won the Big Ten East.

Potential playoff expansion helps teams like Michigan possibly crack the postseason tournament, without winning its own division in some instances.

Here is what he said at Big Ten Media Days.

“Now they’re starting to talk about it’s a good thing increasing the number of teams in the playoffs,” said Harbaugh to Big Ten Network. “College football was the only (sport) that had four, and that’s — you talk about whatever playoff you want. You talk about professional, any sport, college, peewee — anything — high school, grade school, junior high. I mean, nobody’s got just four. … I think it’s good for the sport of college football, you know?

To date, only two Big Ten programs have ever sent a team into the College Football Playoff, and Michigan is not one of them. While the Wolverines have played in New Year’s Six bowls before, they have not even been able to get to Indianapolis during the playoff era. By seeing the playoff potentially expanded from four to 12 teams, one would think that would help Michigan’s chances.

Ultimately, as long as arch rival Ohio State has it going, it will be difficult for Michigan to usurp them in the Big Ten hierarchy. Potentially adding a few more at-large bids into an expanded field would do a world of good to a program like Michigan.

If the playoff does expand as expected, it will do wonders when it comes to Harbaugh being able to coach at his alma mater for the foreseeable future.

If Harbaugh does not endorse College Football Playoff expansion, then nobody should endorse it.
