With Texas and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 for the SEC, West Virginia could leave for the ACC.

After Texas and Oklahoma’s joint decision to leave the Big 12 with all signs pointing towards them joining the SEC, West Virginia seems ripe for the picking if the ACC wants to add the Mountaineers.

While teams like Kansas and maybe even Iowa State could be heading to the Big Ten, West Virginia has never been the ideal geographic fit in the Big 12 since arriving in 2012. Yes, the Mountaineers could stay in the new-look “Big Eight”, but the potential fit with the ACC makes way too much sense for WVU not to dip its toes into the conference realignment game once again.

How good of a fit is it to have West Virginia possibly joining the ACC in conference realignment?

West Virginia to ACC rumors swirling with Big 12 losing Texas, Oklahoma

The ACC has 14 full-time members, as well as Notre Dame in all sports but football. West Virginia already has several regional and former Big East rivals in the ACC. Among those include Virginia Tech, Syracuse and above all else, Pittsburgh. One can argue the biggest loss college football experienced last realignment was the death of the Backyard Brawl between the Appalachian foes.

While the ACC’s notable dip into the old Big East has not been as fruitful as it had hoped, essentially swapping out Maryland for Louisville with the Terrapins’ departure for the Big Ten has been worthwhile. With multiple strong athletic programs and a ton of rivals in-conference already, it makes all the sense in the world for West Virginia to possibly be joining the ACC here soon.

By leaving the Big 12 for the ACC, West Virginia will no longer be burdened by cross-country travel.
