The Yankees need to make a big move at the trade deadline to bolster their playoff hopes. Here are three options for Brian Cashman.

Friday’s MLB Trade Deadline is fast approaching and Yankees fans are getting restless. The team clearly needs several upgrades if they’re going to emerge as serious World Series contenders. Brian Cashman has serious work to do if he wants to correct the flawed roster he’s constructed.

The good news for fans in the Bronx is that the Yankees are clearly poised to do something. The team’s decision to send relievers Luis Cessa and Justin Wilson to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a player to be named later sends a clear signal that more moves are in the offing. Neither player was viewed by the organization as a postseason difference-maker. Offloading both players to the Reds frees up valuable roster spots and salary cap space for New York to utilize in the coming days.

There’s no guarantee the Yankees are going to make a big deal before the trade deadline slams shut, but it’s clear Cashman and his front office are planning to shake things up. Here are three potential deals New York could look at in the coming days.

3. Yankees rumors: New York needs to upgrade the bullpen

The Yankees already added Clay Holmes to the bullpen mix earlier this week but there’s still work to be done. He gives Aaron Boone another solid arm to work with in the middle innings, but he’s not the high-leverage addition New York needs to really move the needle.

Craig Kimbrel is the biggest name available on the open market, but his volatile personality makes him a poor fit inside the Yankees clubhouse. Instead, keep a close eye on second-tier targets like Daniel Bard, Mychal Givens, or Joakim Soria.

No reliever is going to cost the Yankees more than a mid-tier prospect to acquire. Adding a high-quality bullpen arm isn’t the seismic move New York fans are looking for at the moment, but it could pay off handsomely down the stretch.
