3 trades the Yankees need to make at the trade deadline to make playoff push
2. MLB rumors: Yankees need to add a left-handed bat
The fact that Yankee Stadium is a left-handed hitter’s paradise makes it confounding that the Yankees’ lineup isn’t littered with southpaw power hitters. It’s easy to envision a scenario where Cashman looks to correct that mistake ahead of this year’s trade deadline.
Joey Gallo is the left-handed slugger on the name of everyone’s lips and he ticks a lot of boxes for the Yankees. He’s a patient power hitter that fits perfectly into the middle of New York’s order. He’s just the sort of “savage in the box” that Boone wants to build his team around.
The underrated aspect of Gallo’s game that can help the Yankees is his defensive versatility. He’s a clear plus defender at both corner outfield spots and there’s even a chance he can give Boone valuable starts in center field to help keep the team’s outfield corps fresh. That’s not an ideal defensive setup for New York but beggars can’t be choosers.
The fact that Gallo is under team control for another season will embolden the Rangers to ask for a big return in exchange for their veteran outfielder. The Yankees might stay out of the race for Gallo if Texas demands a premium prospect in the deal. If, however, New York can get away with sending a healthy selection of mid-tier minor leaguers with upside they will jump all over the opportunity.
