After Anthony Rizzo was traded to the New York Yankees, he took one more trip around Wrigley Field with his family.

The Chicago Cubs lost more than its game against the Reds on Thursday.

Anthony Rizzo, the heart and soul of the Cubs clubhouse, was traded out of town. The New York Yankees will have Rizzo for the rest of the season, but an unimaginable void has been left on the North Side of Chicago.

Rizzo was a World Series hero, delivering to Cubs fans something that had eluded them for over a century. His statue will be erected outside of the Friendly Confines one day, his jersey will still be worn by fans inside Wrigley, and the memories he left behind will never be erased.

But there’s a sense of loss — of mourning — among Cubs fans. It’s a sadness that goes both ways, as Rizzo was robbed of a chance to give a farewell to fans after being held out of the lineup on Thursday as a precaution ahead of his eventual trade.

Rizzo took time to say goodbye to Wrigley Field anyway.

As news of his stunning trade rippled across baseball, Rizzo took his family out onto the field at Wrigley to big adieu to the place they called home for the last decade.

That’s a bittersweet sight for Cubs fans. The love the Rizzo’s have for the fandom and the legacy of the Cubs is real, but it’s a recognition being shown under the most heartbreaking of circumstances for fans.

There’s a chance Rizzo comes back in free agency, as his contract is up at the end of this season and there’s an unlikely chance he re-ups with the Yankees. So many this is a see ya later rather than a goodbye for the Rizzo’s, but that doesn’t make the farewell any less painful.
