You can count Matthew McConaughey among the Texas football fans who are excited about the Longhorns’ upcoming move to the SEC.

After the Southeastern Conference extended invites to the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners on Thursday, both UT and OU have formally accepted and will be leaving the Big 12 for the greener pastures of the SEC in the future.

And as it turns out, Matthew McConaughey is among the folks who are looking forward to his favorite college football team finding a path to a considerably more stable and more prestigious conference.

McConaughey, a prominent Texas football fan, who has also been a notable University of Texas instructor and is also the University of Texas’ Minister of Culture, took to Twitter to share his thoughts about the Longhorns’ upcoming move to the SEC.

Unsurprisingly, the Uvalde, Texas native thinks very highly of UT and as well as its “pride and tradition,” which are apparently “not for the weak or timid.”

Matthew McConaughey is excited for Texas to make the move to the SEC

As of right now, Texas and Oklahoma are set to move to the SEC in 2025, once their current contracts that involve the Big 12 expire. With that being said, it seems like there’s a chance the Longhorns and Sooners end up in the SEC sooner than that.

It all depends on whether or not Texas and Oklahoma can find a way to split from the Big 12 between now and then. It would certainly be awkward for all parties involved for UT and OU to continue to be in the Big 12 while their future lies in the SEC.

But we’ll see how this actually unfolds.

With as messy as this has been (including the fact that the Big 12 sent a cease and desist letter to ESPN that included an accusation that ESPN encouraged other conferences to try and steal away other members), nothing about this should be surprising.
