5 quarterback options for the Colts if Carson Wentz misses time
The 49ers traded up in the draft to secure Trey Lance as their quarterback of the future, but absent a trade offer they liked at any point in the offseason Garoppolo is still around. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has brushed off the idea of a quarterback competition, while anointing Garoppolo as the starter, but it’s not as if he would say anything else. Garoppolo is also saying the right things.
“Honestly I try not to put too much thought into that. I think that stuff just comes naturally. And it’s not like I would ever hold something away from him,” Garoppolo said to reporters on Lance eventually becoming the starting quarterback.
The Colts don’t necessarily need a star under center. They need someone who is steady, and can distribute/take care of the ball. The parallel between Wentz and Garoppolo starts with durability, or lack thereof, so that is a concern in some sense as Indianapolis surveys its options. But if the 2019 season in San Francisco is proof of anything, it’s that Garoppolo can thrive in a good offense.
It may not happen immediately, as the 49ers consider if Lance is ready to start right away. But as Week 1 approaches, and there’s clarity on Wentz (whatever that looks like), the Colts and 49ers could come together on a deal for “Jimmy G.”
