Shocking news has arrived out of Catalonia, as Barcelona has announced that Lionel Messi won’t be returning to the club.

In inarguably one of the biggest bombs of the summer, Lionel Messi and Barcelona is no more. While the two sides had come to an agreement on a new deal, he had never put the pen to paper to make things official.

Now, in news that will rock the soccer world as we know it, Barcelona has announced that the negotiations are done and that Messi has played his last game for the La Liga giants. Yup, Messi won’t return to Barcelona and will suit up for a new club this season. Oh my.

Lionel Messi leaving Barcelona news

“Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations),” the club said in a statement.

“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.”

How long has Messi played for Barcelona?

Messi will go down as the best player to ever suit up for Barcelona. In his remarkable playing days, Messi helped the team win the La Liga title 10 times, while also winning the Champions League four times in his 17 years donning the club’s shirt.

There’s a constant debate as to whether or not he or Cristiano Ronaldo is the GOAT, but Messi appeared to have taken the lead after he got over the bump and powered Argentina to a Copa America championship game win over Brazil last month.

Now, we must wait and see which team Messi will play for next. Having said that, countless hearts are no doubt broken all over Barcelona. Saying goodbye to Messi is a tough pill to swallow.

Next. Buckle up, Jack Grealish to Manchester City is a done deal. dark
