The alternate Nebraska football uniforms going viral on Twitter are not real.

No, the Nebraska football team will not be wearing these horrendous-looking “Lil Red” alternate uniforms during their Sept. 18 game vs. old Big Eight rival Oklahoma.

This was a troll job that originally started as a joke on Reddit among Nebraska fans a few years ago. It tricked several people, including some verified accounts into thinking these uniforms were real and would be worn during the game vs. Oklahoma.

The uniforms were ridiculed for looking like Super Mario, but fear not, it’s just a joke.

Nebraska has a lot of issues right now, but an alternate uniform based around its absolutely terrifying inflatable No. 2 mascot is not one of them. Could you imagine if the Cornhuskers actually showed up in Norman wearing these jerseys? Everybody in the Sooner State would have every right to bet their 401Ks on the Sooners to win and cover the spread.

Nebraska football: These “Lil Red” alternate uniforms are fake news

If Nebraska were to ever don an alternate uniform based on one of their mascots, it has to be inspired by Cobman. He was more frightening than the original Children of the Corn. If you want to strike fear in the opposition, have all of Memorial Stadium in Lincoln silent before cranking “Freak on a Leash” over the loudspeakers before the Cobman Cornhuskers take the field.

All jokes aside, this is a critical year for Frost and Nebraska football. He may have a former Nebraska great as his new athletic director, but this is a once-proud program that needs to get to a bowl game for the life of them. Given that they play in the lesser of the two Big Ten divisions, this should not be as difficult as it has been since Nebraska kicked Bo Pelini to the curb years ago.

Lil Red may be a terrifying mascot, but Lil Red-inspired alternate jerseys strike fear in no one.
