Vikings hope Christian Darrisaw can play Week 1 after surgery

First-Round pick Christian Darrisaw underwent surgery this week, but the Minnesota Vikings are hopeful that he’ll be able to suit up for Week 1.

Concern has definitely arrived for Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, as his projected starting left tackle just had to go under the knife. On Thursday, the news has broke that first-round pick Christian Darrisaw had to undergo core-muscle surgery in Philadelphia.

While this is a bit of a setback, the Vikings are hopeful that there’s enough time for Darrisaw to heal up and get himself on the field for the season-opener going up against the Cincinnati Bengals.

While this a bit of a concern for the Vikings, the good news of course is it was just a minor procedure at the end of the day. The hope is that through his rehab, he can get back on the practice field here soon.

Should that be the case, it’d really improve his chances of getting ready to take on the Bengals. While Darrisaw has been limited at training camp, the coaching staff has been incredibly high on him. Out of Virginia Tech, Darrisaw checks in at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds. He was taken with the No. 23 overall pick.

With his tremendous size and mobility, Darrisaw quickly shot up the depth chart and indeed figures to be the starter at Week 1 to open the year. That’s how good the lineman is at his job and Zimmer wants him protecting Kirk Cousins’ blindside.

Leading up to Week 1, Vikings fans will need to monitor Darrisaw’s health closely. If he’s not able to get himself ready to rock, Rashod Hill is expected to get the nod at left tackle. Only time will tell how things play out here.
